School Resource Officer-Captain Harris Housley
Calhoun City Schools is certainly blessed to have the support of the Calhoun Police Department and Chief Pyle. Safety is our number one priority and Captain Housley works nonstop to promote this effort. Housley always wears a smile and has captured the hearts of students and staff. He can often be found giving high 5's in the hallway or offering to escort students to and from class in addition to monitoring our school and ensuring our safety drills, special events, and daily routines keep student safety front and center.

Calhoun Early Learning Academy students will be learning more about careers this year. Students will also explore the different career pathway opportunities offered at Calhoun High School. During the month of August, CELA students learned about the Education Pathway. Hayley Gilreath, long-time Calhoun City Schools educator who currently works with the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, spoke to kindergarten students on what it's like to be a teacher.
If you are interested in volunteering at Calhoun Early Learning Academy this school year and have not already received a Volunteer Interest Form in your child's folder, please use the form linked to enter your contact information. (Parents who signed up to be a volunteer at the PTO table during Open House do not need to fill out the form linked below.)
Volunteer Interest Forms with more information will be sent home in your child's folder soon. Please return the completed forms to school. Thank you for your interest!

We are excited to offer lunch visitor opportunities throughout the year!
Due to limited seating in our cafeteria, we ask for one adult lunch guest per child per visit. Limited seating also prevents us from being able to accommodate siblings as lunch guests. We will host lunch guests during the week of September 11th-15th. Your child's teacher will communicate their particular guest lunch day for that week and the class will have lunch at their regularly scheduled time. We are making a few changes to lunch visitor days to better serve our students, staff, and welcomed guests. Teachers will send a Remind message requesting an RSVP prior to the lunch date. It is very important that adult guests utilize the RSVP so that we can plan ahead for the number of lunch guests each day. A yellow visitor sticker will be sent home in your child’s folder that MUST be worn on your lunch day by the guest. Lunch guests will utilize the back parking lot for entry (off Meadow Ln) and be greeted by staff for a speedy check in with your yellow sticker.
Can’t make it to lunch? No problem-students without a guest will have a special opportunity to eat with a neighboring teacher and class.
A few cafeteria reminders/guidelines:
*Adult lunches from the cafeteria are $4.00 (exact cash or check only)
*Food purchased from outside “fast food” restaurants, and remaining in original packaging (i.e bags and wrappers) is not permitted in the school cafeteria (must be in a plastic grocery bag or lunchbox)
*Students other than the lunch visitor’s designee will not be permitted to join a lunch party.
*Adult guests must be listed as a verified contact for the student in our student information system.
*Students are encouraged to remain in their seats and follow normal cafeteria procedures.
*Lunch will begin and end on time to keep our other students and staff on schedule.
*Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to lunch start time. Late arrivals may not be permitted.
Students can pay charges in person during their lunch at one of the registers or you can visit schoolcafe.com to make an online payment. This is also a great way to check balances and make payments throughout the year. Specific questions can be directed to School Nutrition Director, Kim Kiker at kikerk@calhounschools.org.
Student Meal Prices: Breakfast= $1.50
JJA Lunch-$1.75
PreK/Kindergarten Lunch-$2.45
Parents have the option to monitor and manage the settings on their child's lunch account through schoolcafe.com.
Calhoun City Schools is currently accepting online applications for meal benefits at www.schoolcafe.com. We encourage everyone to apply as soon as possible as students will be required to pay for meals until approved. Your child's five-digit lunch number is required for the application; if you do not know this number, please contact your child's school.
K Students have completed the Fall MAP Assessment. Teachers sent home a Family Report to view your child's results. Teachers and administrators will use this data to help target instruction in areas of need. Students will take another MAP assessment in December and another in March/April to help teachers and administrators monitor progress and address needs throughout the school year. For more information about your child's results, please contact your child's teacher.
During this Guidance Rotation, students are learning about Friends and how to be a kind friend to others including making friendship bracelets. Students also had the opportunity to draw a self-portrait of how they feel when they are kind to others!
Kindergarten has started working on their fairy tale unit. Classes participated in reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears to compare and contrast the characters, setting, problem, and solution. Students enjoyed sorting and graphing gummy bears, taste testing a variety of "porridge," and enjoying hands on learning and activities. Pictured above are Braylon Ware and Athens Caldwell who built beds out of blocks. Also pictured are the Pink Pigs enjoying blueberry, peach, and strawberry porridge.
You and your child can practice school at home!
Try some of the following:
Writing first name (first letter uppercase and the others lowercase)
Recite the alphabet without singing
Naming days of the week
Recognizing numbers 0-10
We also encourage you to assist you child with properly hold scissors and a pencil and stay seated at table while working or during meals.
We have had a great week learning about pets in Pre-K. Lime Lizards made a special Gilbert Goldfish snack that goes with the book Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet. The vet clinic was part of our dramatic play center. Goldfish crackers were sorted, graphed, and counted in small group lessons.
Want to continue the learning from home? Here are some of the tasks we work on at school that you can continue practicing and reinforcing from home with your child. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions.
