Recently, students received individual score reports for Georgia Milestone End of Grade Assessments taken in May 2023. These score reports were sent home with each student and we wanted to follow up with information to help parents understand assessment scores.

The Georgia Milestones Assessment System spans grades 3 through high school and measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state content standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. Georgia Milestones provides information about each student's achievement and readiness for his or her next level of learning—be it the next grade, course, or endeavor such as college or career.

The four achievement levels on Georgia Milestones are Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner, and Distinguished Learner. The general meaning of each of the four levels is provided below:

Beginning Learners do not yet demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students need substantial academic support to be prepared for the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.

Developing Learners demonstrate partial proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students need additional academic support to ensure success in the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.

Proficient Learners demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students are prepared for the next grade level or course and are on track for college and career readiness.

Distinguished Learners demonstrate advanced proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students are well prepared for the next grade level or course and are well prepared for college and career readiness.

Student Chargers for Chromebooks

charger

As we start the new school year, we are already seeing an issue with students losing their school issued chromebook charger. In an effort to make it easier on parents/students, we are sharing a link to a charger that can be purchased online directly by families that is compatible to our devices.

Charger Ordering Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KLYPFT0/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_7?smid=AITSZY694T5YM&psc=1

There are other options online. The only requirements are that it is USB-C and 65 Watts.

Counselor's Corner

Saturn is an app that has recently soared to popularity with school starting back. It's advertised as a way for student to "easily load their course schedule, get updates about the happenings in their school, and connect with other students in their classes." The scary part is that anyone can make an account pretending to be a student and have access to all this information! According to Bark, "This app is definitely dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed." College & Career

5 C’s / EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

In addition to providing academic instruction, preparing students to be college and career-ready is a priority for Calhoun City Schools. Local business, industry partners, and post-secondary schools have indicated the importance of strong power skills, also called soft skills, employability skills, work ethic, or 21st Century skills, to the success of their employees and businesses. Employability Skills should be included as an explicit and integral part of classroom instruction, embedded in class activities. In response to this, Calhoun City Schools will implement 5 C’s instruction in PreK-12th grade. The 5 C’s for Success include: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Community.
